"I Am Never Eating Mango Sticky Rice Again... We All Know I Don't Mean That"

สวัสดีครับ Sawatdee kap!

Be honest, you were nervous. Coronavirus going around and Elder Barrett's email still hasn't been sent out!! Don't you worry, child. This was a long week because it's transfers! Woo! I'm staying right here in Ubon (frick yeah man!), but Elder Thorn is heading out of here to taller skyscrapers in Bangkok. But there's no need to be sad, because missions only get better! My new companion is Elder Scott, who I have yet to meet, but I'm way excited to learn from him and have a ton of new experiences!

MY MASTERPIECE
We've been working on a service project, we're re-painting a school/activity center building thing that was kinda wrecked by all the floods. When the river floods (every year), this building is completely underwater, so the paint has kinda been dying. I got pretty paint splattered (my poor Oregon Track shirt) and there are still flecks of paint stuck in my arm hair, but it's been way fun! Now this is when I share about something that happened that might give my mom a heart attack and make my dad say, "oh, dude that is so awesome!" So Mom, this is your warning. As we were painting, I was bent over to check on the wall a little bit. Now something about Thailand: the buildings are much shorter, because there aren't many 6 foot tall Thais. I happen to be a 6 foot tall guava, and stood up right into a beam that was holding up the ceiling. Didn't hurt much, but when I felt it, my hand was a little wet. And when I looked at my hand I was confused, because the paint that we were using was definitely not red. Blood was kinda running down my face, even though this was the smallest little cut. I was fine, but when the Elders who weren't there saw pictures of it they thought I was dying and called Elder Thorn to make sure I wasn't in the hospital or anything haha.

BANGKOK, THE ORIENTAL CITY
Elder Thorn and I got to go to Bangkok this week! It was way fun and I forgot how much more humid Bangkok is than Ubon. It's ridiculous haha. But we took a sleeper train from Ubon and met some kids who wanted to practice some English with us and that was way fun. When we got into Bangkok, I got myself a chocolate filled bread muffin thing that was so good. So tasty oh man. We got our stuff done over there and I even filled out a baptismal record while I was at it haha. Bangkok is so busy, it's insane. The Esan is definitely more my speed haha. But we ate some Texas Chicken before we headed out and barely found a bus to Ubon. I think it was mostly because when you're white and you can speak Esan, the ticket ladies are a little friendlier to you haha. That bus ride was nuts, though. My chair didn't recline, the bus was freezing cold, my knees were tucked the entire ride (and I need to stretch out my legs so often haha), and on top of all of that, we rode for 14 sleepless hours back to Ubon. It was an experience haha. We met someone from Yasothon sitting next to us that we talked to for like 30 minutes, but other than that it was a quiet, cramped, freezing, looooong ride. But y'know what it's a fun story haha.

FULL SEND หรือ NO SEND
So I found out something that really helps me as far as speaking Thai. Other than tons of trust in God along with about all the prayers I could give, I've realized that I'm not truly exercizing my faith unless I go all in with speaking Thai. I need to full send it. If I don't have confidence in myself and that God is going to help me where I fall short. The Gift of Tongues is real, but not when you don't use it! I've had a ton of lessons since last week where I decided that I know what I want to say, so I'm just gonna say it! When I do that, my Thai sounds way smoother, I can say more, and it makes much more sense. Basically, just be comfortable when you're speaking the language! Be confident and just speak like you would in English just use some different sounding words haha. Something that's really cool that's been happening is every now and then it won't even hit me that I'm speaking Thai or that someone else is speaking Thai. I'll hear someone and I'll think, "wait why are they speaking English? Wait, that's Thai!!!" I'm pretty sure I had a dream in Thai the other night, but didn't even realize that it was in Thai until after I woke up! It's the best. I love being a missionary.

FAITH
I've realized this week that I need stronger faith. How am I going to improve and grow without trust in the Lord? In Come Follow Me, I read about how when Ishmael died, his family and Laman and Lemuel all started to complain. They had completely forgotten all that the Lord had already done for them all because of this one difficulty. How do we respond to trials? How do we respond to hardship? Do we forget the amazing things the Lord has already done for us or do we turn to him and ask him for help? Do we complain or are we grateful? Hard times will come, they always do. No matter how great things may be, they'll be a lot less great sooner or later. Faith is all about how we respond to these times. Do we have faith that the Lord will help us through this difficulty and we'll be better in the end because of it? Or do we grumble and complain when things get rocky. I'm working on this. This last week, we were following a member on his motorcyle to find a referral. He was riding a little faster than we were used to and we just kept on going haha. I looked at my watch at one point while we were still just booking it and I saw that we had been riding for 30 minutes straight. I could've groaned and asked why I had to do something so hard and so draining, but honestly I just laughed and pushed even harder. We rode for 10 km there and another 10 km back. Very quickly haha. Let's try to enjoy our difficulties and see the benefit of our efforts. The Lord is in charge and when you let him work through you, great things happen. The guy that we met is way nice and we got a return appointment for Saturday! Miracles, people. Miracles.

อร่ออออออออออออย (Oh oh oh oh oh oh)
We have a family in our Ward that is so nice and every other week invites the missionaries over for lunch on Sunday. As this was Elder Dollery's last week in Thailand, they gave us a very special treat. 3 words: Mango. Sticky. Rice. MOUNTAINS OF IT. We got there and peeled the mangoes and sliced 'em up. And then we dug in. We ate so much. We just about died honestly. But I would do it again. Do I have any regrets? Only one. I should've kept shoveling it down. Don't eat until you're full. Eat until you're tired. Amen.

LAST THINGS LAST
-3!
-I had a laundry incident. I dont wanna go into too much detail, but my clean whites were more pink than I would've hoped.
-นุ๋ asked Elder Thorn to baptize him. That's gonna be awkward when we tell him that he's in Bangkok...
-We still haven't died from Coronavirus... but we do have to wear masks now. We're real asians now haha.
-English Class is way fun, but way awkward when you just teach girls.
-Don't think for a second that just because Thailand is so great, I don't remember you. All this mango sticky rice ain't as sweet as you. Love ya mounds of sticky rice worth!

เอ็ลเดอร์ ผมสีแดง (Red haired elder)

1. I hope this guy doesn't die in a chicken fight.
2. We survived the sticky rice with a smile.
3. Way pretty sunset. But you could've guessed that, you're smart.
4-5. Chair pictures. Every chair represents how many more transfers until we die.
6. We're indistinguishable to Thai people now

"Toilet lizard is such a nightmare."

สวัสดีครับ Sawatdee kap!

This week was all over the place. Not just a figure of speech, we went to Roi-Et again. I also had 3 different companions this week (4 if you count พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์). And I met my nemesis, the toilet lizard.

NAH FAM, WE AIN'T ABOUT THAT
We met a ton of new friends this week, but I'm going to focus on อ๊อบ, because he is easily the most interesting. One day, as we were biking to meet one of our investigators, this crazy drunk guy called us over. In Thailand, people kinda just get drunk whenever. Gives us some pretty funny experiences. But he told us that he's Muslim and he wants to quit smoking and drinking and be a better person, so he invited us to come back and teach! We also met this family who had a huge pile of dirt in front of their house and we helped shovel it in! Apparently it's protection against flooding. But they were so hard to understand. Elder Thorn leaned over to me and said, "I think he's speaking straight up Lao!" But yeah we may come back and teach the mom because she's way nice!

SWITCH IT OFF, SWITCH IT OFF
We are coming close to the end of my first transfer, and we had yet to do any switch offs within our district. So we fit some in haha. The first one was with Elder Dollery. This is his last transfer before he heads home to Australia, so his Thai is already so freaking good. We went and taught ก๊อบ, the crazy drunk guy. He was still drunk as ever and holding a cigarette and we told him that if he held it, we wouldn't teach him. At the end of the lesson he threw his lighter on the ground and Elder Dollery stomped on his cigarette. He said he likes to hold cigarettes because it makes him feel cool. So we broke off a twig from a tree and told him to hold that instead. He said, " this is way cooler!!" Love him haha. While we went to meet someone else, we took a quick bathroom break and met toilet lizard, which was pretty much the scariest thing ever. Elder Dollery scared it and it swam back in and we never saw it again. We headed back home and Elder Dollery's tire exploded. As we were walking back, his front tire off and hanging on my handlebars, a nice family picked us up and took us to a bike shop which was co owned by a member! We ended the night sharing some groovy tunes on our guitars. Switch off number 2 was with Elder Foushee. He was in the MTC for a little with me so we're both pretty fresh out here. But every lesson, I was so freaking blessed. We were totally understanding questions and answering them. Thai is way hard, but sometimes it's not. Understand? Me neither. But we totally got across everything we needed to. Heck, I even made two members laugh at the end of the night. Whether that was because my jokes were funny, or I just suck at Thai is yet to be determined. At lunch, we met someone at the restaurant who told us that he was a christian, so we gave him a Book of Mormon and got his Facebook, so stay tuned. We had a cleaning party at the church and we all ate pizza at the end. Elder Thorn and Elder Dollery sneakily saved some pizza for the missionaries because they had to leave early, so dinner on Sunday was pretty good. Did I eat 8 slices of pizza, you ask? I really can't say, but yes.

MIRACLES? YES, PLEASE
We've been teaching มุ๋, the guitar guy that we just found out today we've been spelling his name wrong this whole time, and he is so on board and ready and excited to be a part of the church! We've been teaching him the commandments and he just loves it all! Yesterday, we taught him about tithing. As we explained how to do it, he took a tithing slip and said, "I'll fill it out right now!" I love the enthusiasm, but he's not quite a member yet haha. เงี่ยม wanted to come to church really bad, and we got her a ride! So นุ๋ wasnt the only investigator that came to church! In the second hour class, someone asked a question and นุ๋ got up and answered. I was thinking, "heck yeah that's my boy right there!" Then another question was asked, and right in front of us, it's เงี่ยม answering!! Heck yes!! Elder Thorn and I did a secret fist bump under the chairs. We had an area 70 come, so we had an extra hour and a half of church haha. Luckily both of our investigators loved the extra church! I'm so excited for both of them!

THE PARABLE OF THE SHOWER
Thailand isn't quite like home in Utah. Let me give you an example, our bathrooms are just one room with everything in it. Meaning that you shower just about a foot away from where you do your business. And the way you control the heat of the water is from a box right next to the showerhead. The interesting thing about our shower is that the water on the outside part of the showerhead is always cold, while the hot water that we came for is on the inside part. You really need to commit yourself and go all in to get through the cold water and into the hot water. I'd like to liken this to life. Sometimes, we ask for hot water and it doesn't come right away. We do everything we're supposed to, we feel it with our foot every few seconds, we even just sit there and wait and hope for the hot water to finally come on out. If we do that, we'll never feel the hot water and we'll never get that joy. Sometimes, life gives us Thai showers. And if we sit there and wait for the water to get any better, it's not gonna happen. We need to push ourselves and go through the wall of cold water to get to the hot water sometimes. In my mission so far, I've ran into cold water plenty of times (but I haven't been swimming, don't worry), and I've learned that if I push through the cold water, the warm water will be there! Trust me, ok? Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

LAST THINGS LAST
-2!
-We have these Oreos covered in Cadbury chocolate and it's even better than it sounds.
-I've been playing a lot of guitar in my downtime, and my guitar callouses are back! If any of you would send me some guitar chords or tabs or whatever, I'd be very grateful.
-At sports night, I spiked a volleyball into someone's face Scott Sterling style. He was ok.
-Thai coconut ice cream is so so good. And sticky rice at the bottom of the bowl will take you to flavor nirvana.
-I ate at McDonald's last week. Ketchup is not the same over here, not even Mickey D's is safe.
-Thanks for reading this far, or at least skipping to the last paragraph. No matter where you're at right now, I love you! ✌😁

If you let Don die, so help me...!

สวัสดีครับ Sawatdee kap!

This was a crazy week. I was sick, biked and then biked some more, talked to even more people, ate too much pizza, got a new slippery friend, and taught a college class! Yeah that's for real!

"I LOVE YOU!" "...ครับ" (Yes sir)
On Thursday, Elder Thorn and I woke up early and poured ourselves some cereal (I made the terrible mistake of buying นมเปรี้ยว, or sour milk). And then we headed out an hour in a taxi to อำนาจเจริญ to teach English at a technical college out there! Our first class had like 80-90 people in it, and we just practiced asking and answering simple questions. For the second group of about 40, we played memory games and telephone and a ton of other games with them. We ate some amazing eggs, papaya salad, sticky rice, and chicken for lunch (out of the school's wallet). We went back in for one last hour and taught a group of all boys and they were so awesome. Although they all wanted to know if I smoked weed and if my sisters were beautiful. I told them nope, I don't do that. And I don't know if they are, I've never really asked myself that question before haha. But Thai girls are IN LOVE with white guys. Every classroom we'd walk past, we would just hear screaming. The teachers would pull us in and have us talk to the students (couldn't tell you how many of them asked if I have a girlfriend), and a gay kid confessed his love to me so that was something. We headed home on a bus that was not built for a lanky 6 foot white kid, shoulder to shoulder with so many people, but I did get a pretty great picture with me and Elder Thorn that I'll have to send haha.

IF YOU AREN'T HAVING FUN, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG
Something that I learned this week was that if my mission isn't fun, then I'm doing it wrong. I'm literally in Thailand, not to flex. So I decided that I'm going to do everything I can to get the most out of this. Crack a joke or two in a lesson, go somewhere new, make something way too spicy, listen to one of Elder Dollery's audio journals, that sort of thing. I think that kinda applies to everyone. Odds are if you're reading this you're in school, a busy adult with a job and a family and stuff like that. แก่แล้ว. Or maybe even a grandparent chilling out all day, reading magazines, watching golf, and eating oatmeal! Whatever you do, get the best out of it! Look for the good, and make it the best!

*SLAPS GUITAR* OK HERE'S WONDERWALL
We've had some awesome jam sessions in our house after our day is over. I'll get a jam going, and Elder Dollery will come in on the harmonica or just start freestyling some lyrics. It's actually really sick and every now and then everything all starts to come together. Gorgeous. หนู plays guitar too! We find him outside of his motorcycle shop just jamming away all the time. I hope to learn a ton of Thai songs from him haha. But guess what?? We gave him a baptism date!! YESSS!! He's still far from ready, but he's so willing and anxious to learn that I'm sure he'll get there. We're gonna be visiting him a ton in the next couple of weeks to teach and prepare him as much as possible. Really cool thing that happened today was he literally asked me to give him my life's story.I started with talking about how my family have always been members and I looked to a lot of them as examples of missionaries and how I always wanted to be like that. I told him about my first time living away from home, working at Aspen Grove. I told him about how when I was on my own I had to choose if I really cared about living the gospel and having my own testimony. And when I decided that I did and did all of the things on my own that I was supposed to be doing, my testimony and relationship with my heavenly father grew so much and prepared me for being a missionary. So yeah, I hope he's gonna keep learning and growing because he's doing amazing.

OPERATION: FOUSHEE
I decided that I want to be having fun on my mission, so Elder Thorn and I decided to have some traditions every morning to kick start our day. We bro hug after we pray at the door to start our day, and we have Operation: Foushee, which means that we don't leave the house in the morning until we shoot Elder Foushee with Nerf guns. Things are just so much fun over here.

UM THAT CAN'T BE GOOD
We had a funny experience on Sunday. We went to the church to print out a goal setting sheet for Elder Thorn before sacrament. He hit print and the printer was giving us a bunch of confusing messages. Nothing was really making sense. That's when I noticed that the computer was sitting in a pool of ink. A growing pool of ink. We acted quickly, I lifted up the printer, he started wiping it down. That's when the Ward Clerk came in. Probably wasnt a great scene to see two Elders, hands covered in black ink, wiping down the desk that was even more covered. I couldn't tell if he was mad, because I've never seen a trace of emotion on his face, and I don't understand Thai. So if he hates us now, I have no idea and because of that I don't need to be afraid of him.

ภาษาไทย (Thai language)
Thai is a grind haha. It's tough, I'm not gonna sugar-coat it. But every now and then I think I can understand it! I'm having conversations with members when we all eat after church, I'm answering questions in lessons. I'm reading the Book of Mormon in Thai, let's go! I've been able to share experiences and help share in lessons! It's so fun to be able to feel myself grow. I'll be sharing in a lesson and I'll be like, "whoa, I had no idea how to express that last week. Cool beans." I still don't understand it half of the time, and sometimes all of the translating makes my brain fall asleep, but I'm so excited to get to the point where I just step back and realize that I can speak Thai. That's gonna be a good day haha. But I've always got God, who understands and listens to me no matter what language I speak haha. I've had some struggles with the language, but every time I've turned to God and trusted in him, he has brought me comfort. I know He is there and I know that He's with me every step of the way. If you turn to God, He will turn your day around!

THE ODDS OF THAT ARE EVENS
We needed a trash can. We've been lacking. So on the way home, we bought one like the good, responsible missionaries that we are. An hour later, the other Elders fling open the door. In Elder Dollery's hand is an identical trash can that he bought from the same store in the same market. Great minds think alike?

LAST THINGS LAST
-We have a pet gecko! We caught him and now he is ours. His name is Don.
-We bike so much haha. We've been biking for over an hour straight just to get to one person. But it's so fun haha. Let's me turn on the iPod in my brain. And my brain has Spotify Premium.
-The pad thai place across from the church is so amazing. And fried chicken in Thailand is way better than in the United States. That's not blasphemy it's truth.
-I made my own ส้มตำ on Sunday!
-There is a burger stand that's open in the morning near our house called KKK Burger. Terrible name, delicious burgers. Racism never tasted so good.
-I learned how to play rugby with Elder Dollery. See you on the field.
-Elder Thorn shaved his eyebrows like 2 minutes ago. I have no words.
-Word of the week: ทัศนคติ, attitude. It's so fun to say. Google translate it.
-I love cantaloupe, I love guitar, I love fanny packs, I love ส้มตำ, I love bamboo socks, I love coconut joy ice cream, Thai girls love me, and I love you.

Celestial Splash

สวัสดีครับ Sawatdee kap!

Wow, what a week! We had New Year! สวัสดีปีไหม่! It's 2020 and you know what that means! It's my blackout year for the mission! I'm in Thailand for all of 2020, let's go! This last week was really fun and really hard at the same time. But when you keep your head down and do the work, pray, pray, and then pray again, and put your trust in the Lord, you'll see miracles!

GRAB A SLICE OF 'ZA, BRAH
Pizza Company. Any RMs from Thailand know what I'm talking about. They put ketchup on their pizza and stuff. Crazy. But we've been helping ourselves to some hot slices of yum for the new year and other... good reasons? But yeah. We've been eating a lot of pizza. I also ate my new favorite food this week: น้ำดกหมู (nam doke moo, waterfall pork). Oh my goodness you have no idea how unbelievably delicious. I couldn't even begin to explain. It is so so so good. I love Thai food. I know I'm going to regret saying this, but I still have yet to try any food that I haven't liked. It's all so good! Not to mention, food in Thailand is so cheap. Seriously you can get a full meal from a restaurant for like $1.25. Thailand is fantastic.

DO YOU SPEAK MY LANGUAGE
This language is so complicated, but it's not, but it is. Understand? No? Me neither. It's so cool to be able to speak Thai. How many people do you know that can speak Thai? Probably not that many! But guess what, sometimes I can! It's really weird, some conversations, I understand everything and I can respond with little to no hesitation. What's really frustrating is half of the time I get super lost. I got pretty frustrated on Sunday after we met with a really old member and I didn't understand anything. I felt super useless and I was really getting down on myself. We went back home and I prayed harder and longer than ever haha. Not much else happened for the rest of the day that gave me a ton of opportunity to practice Thai, but on Monday, something happened. We biked like 45 minutes out to talk to a less active member, and we found his mom there too, who is one of the people we're talking to! We talked to them about prayer and cleared up some questions and things they didn't quite understand about God. I understood all of it, I shared from my heart, and I felt like I was really sharing what I wanted to say, but I was saying it all in Thai!! It was amazing! I don't think I've ever participated so much in a lesson, but this time I just couldn't stop sharing! I could answer questions, I could share scriptures! If you put your trust in the Lord and truly, humbly ask Him for help, you will get it! I just did!

CELESTIAL SPLASH
Ok, so really quick this is just a cool story and I don't think you should take it as doctrine or anything but it blew my mind. We were talking to Sister เงี่ยม about going to church. Last week, she said she would go but she didn't because when she was waiting for her ride, a drunk guy came to her and scared her off. Freaking Satan sent that guy, I know he did. But I felt impressed to share 1 Nephi 3:7 with her to share that even though it can seem scary or difficult, when the Lord gives us commandments he will always provide a way for us to accomplish what he asks of us. I opened straight to the page (straight to it. Chills.) and shared, and then shared my thoughts on how it could help her. The words flew out of my mouth faster than I could think of them and I got my point across to her. Right after that happened, a leaf fell out of a tree 20 feet away and flew over and landed in the center of a toilet paper roll on a table next to us. The way I see it, the Holy Ghost gave me the gift of tongues and then drained a 3 pointer. It was a celestial splash.

ANOTHER ONE
We had a lot of investigators this week that we were hoping to get to church. When we got to the building, we found หนู, the guitar guy that we found on Christmas in the foyer, making friends and chatting it up. It was cool to see him wearing nicer clothes and kinda weird to see him not wearing his pirate hat thingy haha. We sat down for sacrament meeting, and right before it started, as I was talking to a member sitting behind me, I felt a hand on my knee. I turned around and I saw Sister แดง, and she brought investigators with her! Her grandson, อาร์ท, and this elderly couple that she's friends with, สัญญา and เสงี้ยม! Yes! Then, right as the meeting was about to start I hear "Hey, Elder!" right behind me. It was Sister โบ, a less active recent convert and her friend that we've been teaching, เงี่ยม!!! I was so pumped, I was smiling ear to ear for like 15 minutes. I love our investigators so much haha.

SPORTSBALL
We've pulled out the spikeball net a few times to enjoy our P-Day, get in some exercise, or even just show the members. Tons of fun, and I won't have many opportunites to play that after Elder Thorn leaves. We also played basketball in Roi-Et while inviting some people to English class. I may or may not have drained a couple jumpers in a row to seal the W, who knows? And we found some kids playing soccer in a patch of dirt, and we jumped in. It was like the dream of my mission, playing soccer with kids not wearing shoes, using sandals as goals, waiting for people driving their motorcylcles through the field, and taking home the win. It was so so so fun and it's just the best being here in Thailand. I'm loving this country.

การสวดอ้อนวานและศรัทธา (Prayer and Faith)
I've had some tough times this week. I've felt sick. My stomach has been not great, my nose stuffed up, I had a headache from fasting, and I was overall exhausted and frustrated with the language. I prayed for a long time. Like a really long time. God was probably thinking, "I said pray often, but this is just ridiculous." But I realized that this is why people are always saying that their missions were so hard. I can't do this alone. I turned to the Lord and he really lifted me up. I've seen so many miracles and found so many things to keep me happy and excited to share the gospel. It's really such a joy and the power of prayer is so real. I'm sure something in your life right now is less than perfect. Pray! Think that it needs a little more than that? Do all you can, and then PRAY. What are you waiting for? I promise that God hears and answers prayers. Please don't take that amazing truth for granted. We are his children, and he will do whatever he can to help us get through anything. I'm making a goal to stop complaining. Find how a trial or hardship is here for your benefit. Replace a complaint with gratitude! You'll be happier and learn so much more that way!

LAST THINGS LAST

-We might have found a new house! Keep you updated if moving day happens!
-Saturday was Elder Thorn's birthday! connor.thorn@missionary.org wish him a happy birthday but do not tell him I sent you.
